DESCRIPTION:The Energy Step Code was introduced in April 2017 as a voluntary compliance option in the BC Building Code. This new standard relies on energy modelling and maps out the transition to Net Zero Energy Ready buildings in BC over the next 15 years. \nThis performance standard requires energy modelling and an air tightness test on all buildings\, and removes many of the specific requirements for efficiency of products and equipment. This approach increases flexibility for projects but also requires greater coordination between project teams.\n\nThis presentation will provide:\n\n• An overview of the new requirements\n\n• Guidance for designers\, builders\, and trades to take advantage of the flexibility of the Energy Step Code\, including research on the specific costs and design changes from the Energy Step Code\n\n• Update on how local governments will be using the Energy Step Code in bylaws and policies\, including a standardized inspection checklist.\n\nMore information and resources related to the Energy Step Code are available at www.energystepcode.ca\n\nPresenter: Zachary May is the acting Director of Policy and Codes Development with the Building and Safety Standards Branch. DESCRIPTION:As a method of procurement\, tendering can be fraught with risks. Errors in accepting or evaluating bids can result in legal liability on the part of the tendering authority.  Errors in the bid submitted in response to an Invitation to Tender can result in legal liability on the part of the bidder.  The law of tenders is complicated and constantly evolving as the courts and the construction industry adapt to new technology and evolving project delivery methods. \nCourse Outline: \n\nIntroduction to the law of tendering including an overview of:\n\n\nThe difference between tenders and RFPs and other procurement methods\nThe bidder’s obligations to the tendering authority\nThe tendering authority’s obligations to the bidder\n\n\nTendering case law update and discussion of recent decisions\nPractical tips and advice on key aspects of tendering\n\nPresenter: An Associate Counsel with SHK\, Marc MacEwing has practiced extensively as a construction lawyer in all aspects of the practice for over 30 years. He has particular expertise as a builders lien lawyer\, as well as in tendering disputes and preparing and analyzing contract documents. Marc advises owners\, contractors\, subcontractors\, material suppliers and design professionals. \nMarc has been listed in the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory as a “repeatedly recommended” leading practitioner in construction law in BC.
